New tips added July 24th 2000 Home-Brewed Registry Cleaner: First Scandisk and Defrag. When this is done "copy", NOT "Move", system.dat and user.dat from your Windows folder to a temporary folder so you'll have a backup in case something goes wrong. Then open Registry Editor by clicking on Start-Run and typing regedit and clicking Ok. When the window opens up go to the Registry menu and select Export Registry. Decide where you want to save the exported Registry (C:\Windows is probably the best) and save it as temp.reg. Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode. This should come up in a black screan with C:\Windows> on the screan. If you saved temp.reg in there then your set to continue if not then you have to switch to where you saved it. Type in "regedit /c temp.reg" without the quotes and hit Enter! The cleaning process may take from 30 minutes to 10 hours so it's a job for the night or when your going out. Just let it run until it's done!!!It may seem like it's hanging on locked up at times, but just LEAVE it. When finished type exit at the prompt to return to windows. If you compare the new system.dat and user.dat files in your windows folders they should be smaller than the ones you saved for backup to a temporary folder. It may not seem like much, but just remember that 1k equals over 1000 characters of text and the registry is all pure text. In a couple of days if everything is working properly than you can delete system.dat and user.dat that you saved to a temporary folder and as well as the temp.reg file! The System Information Utility lets you save all your system settings and information -- and we mean all -- to a text file. Just select File/Export. Always keep a current copy of your settings; if your computer goes south, it can help with troubleshooting. Increase Registry Backups: Win98 keeps the last five backups Registry Checker creates. To save more backups, open \WINDOWS\SCANREG.INI with Notepad and change the MaxBackupCopies= value from 5 to a higher number.Restoring a Win98 Registry Save: Every time you start your Win98 PC, the Registry Checker automatically creates a backup of the Registry. It stores the five most recent backup copies in the \Windows\Sysbckup folder -- they are stored as RB001.CAB, RB002.CAB, and so on. If you want to manually back up the Registry before installing software that may effect the registry, you should run the System Info utility (Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools), then go to the Tools menu and select Registry Checker. After a quick scan, Registry Checker will offer to make a backup. Click Yes to make it overwrite the oldest backup file with an updated one. To restore a Registry backup, boot your computer to a C:> prompt and run ScanReg. Follow the instructions to view your backed-up Registry files and restore the most recent one.
